How to Prep Wheels for Powder Coating
A flawless wheel finish starts long before any color goes on. Here's the prep that separates a coating that lasts years from one that flakes in months.

Wheels are one of the most popular things we powder coat — and for good reason. A fresh powder finish transforms a car or truck, and it holds up to brake dust, road salt, and rock chips far better than paint. But the result lives and dies on the prep. Here's exactly how proper wheel prep works, whether you're handing them to us or curious what goes into it.
The golden rule
Powder coating is only as good as the surface beneath it. Bare, clean, contaminant-free metal is non-negotiable — that's what makes the finish bond and last for years.
Step 1: Dismount the tires
Wheels go into a curing oven at roughly 400°F, so the tires must come off first — there's no coating a mounted tire. Valve stems, wheel weights, and TPMS sensors come off too. We can coordinate tire removal and remounting so you drop off and pick up ready to roll.
Step 2: Strip the old finish
Every old coating has to go — factory paint, clear coat, chrome, or a previous powder job. You cannot reliably coat over an existing finish; it traps contaminants and causes the new layer to flake. We sandblast each wheel back to clean, bare metal, which both removes the old finish and gives the surface the slight texture (a "profile") that powder grips onto.
Step 3: Inspect & repair
With the wheel stripped, every flaw is visible — curb rash, pitting, corrosion, small cracks. This is the moment to address them. Blasting clears out surface corrosion, and minor cosmetic damage can be smoothed before coating so it doesn't telegraph through the finish.
Step 4: Clean and de-gas
After blasting, the wheel is blown down and cleaned so not a speck of dust, oil, or fingerprint oil remains — even skin oils can cause a blemish. Cast aluminum wheels are often pre-baked (out-gassed) in the oven first, which forces trapped gases out of the porous metal so they don't bubble up through the finish later.
Step 5: Coat and cure
Now the fun part. The wheel is grounded and the charged powder is applied evenly, then it goes into the oven to melt and cure into a single hard shell. Many wheels get a base coat plus a clear top coat — especially metallics and candies — for extra depth and protection. The result is a factory-smooth, ultra-durable finish in the exact color you picked.
